The Jot It Down! Program is the third component of your family’s writing and language arts instruction for 5-8 year olds. It gives you the practical, step-by-step implementation of what to write, not just how to write.

Jot It Down! is the companion piece to The Wand (grades K-2) or The Arrow (grades 3-6) and The Writer’s Jungle (all ages).

The three together create a stable three-legged stool from which you will confidently perch as you lead your children into the adventure of writing and literature, both philosophically and practically.

Here’s how it works.

  1. The Writer’s Jungle provides you with the essential tools that enable you to be an effective writing coach and ally to your kids. It’s the must have tool for teaching the writing process (original writing). Buy this first.

  2. The Wand or The Arrow (depending on the age of your child) is the tool that complements The Writer’s Jungle by teaching the mechanics of writing using quality literature. Select one.

  3. Jot It Down! is the product that gives you a practical routine (think, schedule ala Brave Writer) and 10 month-long writing projects (assignments). Buy this next!

The Jot It Down! program completes your language arts and writing program for the coming year.

The Writer’s Jungle and the language arts programs (such as The Arrow or The Wand), work with Jot It Down!.

The Skinny

Jot It Down! has three parts:

  • Language Arts Routine
  • Oral Practices
  • Writing Program (10 Month-long Writing Projects)

Writing Projects are based on the Brave Writer philosophy:

  • less is more,
  • one project per month,
  • projects are flexible and able to be used repeatedly and for more than one age/grade level.

In fact, you can easily use these projects with older kids, too. Older children will simply do more of their own “transcription” work than their younger siblings. The projects are immersive and develop skills students need for academic writing down the road.

What kind of product is it?

The Jot It Down! program is:

  • an 80 page
  • digital
  • four-color product
  • that you will download to your computer.

It can be viewed as a PDF on your iPad, desktop, laptop, or any other device that supports PDF. You may also print the program on a home printer or at a print shop. A letter of permission to print is included in every purchase. (Looks gorgeous on the iPad.)

  • You may purchase Jot It Down on its own, particularly if you already own The Writer’s Jungle.

  • You may prefer to start with Jot It Down and purchase The Writer’s Jungle later, since these are young kids you are working with.

  • Your best bet, though, is to buy one of the packages. We keep the price of Jot It Down lower when you buy it in tandem with The Writer’s Jungle. My hope is that you will not skip the essential skills needed to encourage good writing in your family that are in The Writer’s Jungle.
