Monthly Language Arts Program: (Grades 10-12)

The Slingshot is our book and movie online discussion series for high school students.

The literature and film discussions will be led by:

Jon Bogart, MA American Literature, adjunct faculty Xavier University

While homeschooled students are usually great readers, they often don't get the joy and benefit of in-depth discussion about the books and stories they're reading. Many parents feel inadequate to delve into the themes and literary elements in those works. And plenty of them don't have time to read and digest the meatier aspects of classic novels in order to provide that kind of stimulation to their kids.

Fortunately for Brave Writer, I happen to have a husband whose MA is in American Literature and who teaches Freshman writing as well as Studies in Fiction and Literature and the Moral Imagination at Xavier University. He's taught college writing and fiction for twenty years in California, Ohio and Morocco. He uses his expertise and terrific personality to relate to teens, helping them to delve more deeply into their reading.

The discussions will be held in March and April. You may sign up for one or both. Jon will lead discussions each month with provocative questions and insights into the reading. Students will participate on the forums by responding to the questions, and interacting with Jon and with each other. We spend the first week reading the book and discuss the last three weeks of the month.

 

The best way to think of the Slingshot is to compare it to a Barnes and Noble book club. The SC is a lit club designed for high school students, led by a college English professor. If it met in my house, I'd serve brownies.

Each month's discussion is individually priced so you will want to enroll in them as you determine that you'd like your child to participate.
