Jen has considered herself a writer since she was 9 years old when she opened a notebook and penned her first diary entry. Since then her life has been infused with the written word, as an avid reader, writer and list maker.
Stories written as a child and teen eventually gave way to essays and reports throughout her university education in Canada. Jen holds a B.A. degree in psychology, with her thesis focusing on the effectiveness of extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation in learning. She earned her Masters degree in 2003. Through graduate school and beyond, she has worked extensively with young college students, guiding them in their written work. While her academic career focused on the humanities, she held fast to her love of reading and writing, fulfilling all her electives with english literature courses. The class she took on children's literature began a whole new love affair that she now gets to share with her two children!
Jen has homeschooled for 6 years and truly finds delight in the writing and reading habits of her daughters - one a rabid devourer of graphic novels and all things Pokemon, and the other a fan fiction writer who loves classics. As a new Brave Writer teacher, she cannot wait to get to know what makes your kids tick as well! Now living in the Twin Cities, she runs a Shakespeare reading group for middle schoolers, writes non-fiction (still in her journal, as well as online), and continues her research into learning and creativity in kids.
