A Unique Approach

Brave Writer® takes seriously the need for encouragement and emotional safety in writing.

We offer robust feedback that addresses every part of the writing process.

Our classes take place in writing. We have found writing is most effectively taught through the medium of words.

Embrace Freedom

Short classes (3-6 weeks) with rolling enrollment enable you to work around family vacations, appointments and visits from grandparents.

All classes are asynchronous. Log in and work at any time of day.

Our most popular classes repeat each semester, while others are seasonal.

Our Classroom

Our classroom has been specifically designed for Brave Writer’s unique classes.

Only registered students and the instructor have access to the classroom to ensure your privacy.

Assignments and reading materials are posted by Brave Writer® instructors each week.

Either you (adult at home) or your child will visit the classroom daily at your convenience to read helpful information about the current topic or to find the writing assignment.

Writing is done at home and then typed into the classroom, and shared with both the instructor and other classmates.

Instructor feedback on student writing is offered for all participants to read and benefit. Writing questions are welcomed and encouraged!

Community and Connection

What makes our program especially unique in the world of online education is that we value a warm, inviting, collective experience.

Schools-in-buildings rarely have students read each other's work. Homeschooled children are rarely in a classroom environment to begin with, so the opportunity to read peer-writing is nil.

Our model follows a writer’s workshop model, where students post writing in a shared space where the instructor gives individual feedback to every writer.

Students:

  • have the chance to validate and cheer on their peers
  • get the benefit of instructor comments on many papers, not just their own
  • examine and internalize other ways of writing

Word on the Street

Now that I’m close to ending my own homeschooling journey I can unequivocally say that Brave Writer is the one choice I made that made all the difference in my homeschooling journey.

Lori

[My son] has been able to move easily into his community college classes with the skills he has learned homeschooling and with Brave Writer.

Karen

[T]he space, content and atmosphere of the class made it a safe place for him to be challenged in tough ways that did and will help him grow as a writer and a person.

Annie

This class has been one of the best I've ever taken, not just as a homeschool parent/learning coach, but in all my professional development in 20+ years as an educator.  It is without question the single best writing program I've ever found.
