Help!
You have a child who hates writing. Or, your child is so prolific at writing, you’re afraid you aren’t helping her enough. Or, your child writes well, but the results are wooden and tedious to read. Or, your child has the best imagination ever, but punctuation, spelling and mechanics are atrocious. Or, you’re afraid of writing yourself and have been avoiding it for, oh, the last (yes, you admit it) four years. Gulp!
You’re in the right place. Whether you love to write or fear it, whether your kids are naturally inclined to write or dread it, Brave Writer has a way of empowering all kinds or kids and all kinds of parents to tackle the art of writing and come away with satisfying experiences and writing products.
If you’re new to Brave Writer, Kidswrite Basic is where to begin. It’s the foundational Brave Writer course, which empowers parents to teach their children to write through an interactive format in the Brave Writer classroom. Kidswrite Basic is the online version of the first 9 chapters of The Writer’s Jungle. It offers an environment where you receive support, modeling, and gentle accountability to complete the processes described in the manual.
Thousands of families have discovered that writing doesn’t have to be a battleground, but can be a journey into the unique, creative, quirky minds that your kids share with you verbally every day. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be the conduit to a successful transcription of all that energy and insight so that others get to discover what incredible human beings your kids really are. And, of course, you also want them to write well to reassure yourself that your kids are getting the education you always wanted them to have.
This course covers the following skills:
- Communication (We use a game to get you started! Fun!)
- Freewriting (The breakthrough tool that has unleashed thousands of blocked writers)
- Keen observation (The skill needed to dig out the rich vocabulary lurking inside your child)
- Revising (We give you tools and permission to get in there with your kids and help!)
- Editing (The mechanics mop up!)
- Publishing (Share that great writing with the world!)
These skills are taught in entirely new ways (not seen in other curricula). In this class, parents interact directly with the instructor in a private classroom. The instructor posts assignments while the homeschooling parents post student writing and questions. As you work with your children at home, the instructor will support you, answer your questions, and give you guidance so that you succeed in becoming your child’s best writing coach and ally. Our aim is to make it possible for you to be your child’s writing instructor so that you don’t have to rely on anyone else!
We’ve found that the class environment leads to a rich learning experience for you. Not only will you receive personal feedback on your children’s writing, but you will also be able to read the writing of other homeschooled children and the instructor’s feedback to those families. Because homeschooling can be an isolating experience, we’ve discovered that our online classes offer what an online tutorial can’t: a chance to be exposed to lots of writing by kids at all ages and stages of growth.
This experience gives you more confidence when assessing your own child’s development. (In fact, we find that the experience is usually enormously reassuring since the majority of homeschooling parents tend to be a little nervous that their own children are not performing at a high enough level.)
Kidswrite Basic gives you the chance to develop your writing coach skills while providing your children with valuable feedback, assignment deadlines and the joy of writing for an audience. Please join us!
Kidswrite Basic offers a family discount (the only class that does). Each additional enrolled child in a family pays a reduced fee.
